		<description>It&#039;s reasonable I think in these troubled times for business to make such decisions. Deferring the hiring of low-quality staff(cadets) would seem prudent. A year without cadets is not going to change the world</description>

		<description>Potential journalism cadets are not ‘low quality.’ We have spent three years at university- many of us ineligible for welfare benefits- learning a range of skills from print, to radio, television and online. I myself have spent five weeks of this year doing work placements and internships, staying with friends who out of the kindness of their hearts fed me and gave me a place to stay. Only one of these placements paid- oddly enough it was a Fairfax newspaper. It is very disheartening to graduate from university feeling as though all my hard work has been for nothing. Journalism graduates are very highly qualified to do what we do- report the news. If only that were more widely recognised.</description>
