I also attended the meeting held in London earlier this month mentioned by Fran Baum and colleagues (Closing the Gap in a Generation: Heath Equity through Action on the Social Determinants of Health). Nations are now collaborating as never before to rebuild the international financial system. The same opportunity exists to address global health challenges. Action to restore the world’s economic health could also, if done carefully and thoughtfully, have a great impact on improving the health of the world’s people, especially those who are most disadvantaged now. Governments cannot afford to ignore the expertise and evidence that has accumulated from groups such as the Commission on the Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) (http://www.who.int/social_determinants/en/).
