So There: Ken Henry's comments pertaining to someone starting a business, and that they may have needed to have more than one entity (sole trader, partnership or company). Full transcript of speech available at http://taxreview.treasury.gov.au/content/Content.aspx?doc=html/speeches/01.htm. If they had a company, and non-commercial losses were incurred as an individual, then my word he would have had to be careful not to bring them in to the company. <br />btw, I have run small businesses for 23 years off and on and I find trading as a sole trader is much simpler. I MAY be paying more tax, but I find I can dispense with the services of an accountant.

Saw your Tips and Rumours item today on a supposed 150 retrenchments at Mallesons. Not to put too fine a point on it, the story is complete bulldust. There are no plans for a round of retrenchments at the firm and there has been no email to staff on the issue. We are aware some competitors have been trafficking rumours about Mallesons - they clearly have too much time on their hands. Perhaps trading gossip is what some firms do when their workflow slows. Mallesons doesn't have that problem - we're just getting on with business. Cheers, Kris Barry, Head of Communications, Mallesons Stephen Jaques
