Certainly Abraham Lincoln may have been a president with the greatest of intent but he was backed by business interests in the north whose main objective was to destory the south's economic advantage with it's dirt cheap labour ie:slaves. <br /><br />Since then it's always been the Democrats particulalry from Kennedy onwards who have strived to make advances for African Americans with the greatest changes under the much reviled LBJ.<br /><br /> Perhaps he can recall the odious but pleasant looking Ronnie Regan who coined the phrase "welfare queen", a code word for "black" and then set about undoing as many benefits and advances that he could which Clinton ignored and Bush put into hyper speed. Such has been the sheer hypocrisy of the Republicans since then that when a nitwit like Sarah Palin pops up with a pregnant teenage daughter the Repubs called it a "celebration of life" and ignored their master Reagen's claim that the best title for an unwed pregnant teenage girl (which meant an African American girl of course) should be "promiscuous".<br /><br />For some bizarre reason the usually democratic supporting South which is largely working class has switched to a party that is their gretaest enemy-the Republicans and the reason-the support of the Democratic Party by African Americans. Whatever the Republican Party started off as it bears no relation to the one that exists today-not too disimilar to the Liberal party of Australia , completely side-lined from it's original ideals by the emperical John Howard. Fortunately the original Liberal's ideals are now safely in the hands of Kevin Rudd.
