I have a sneaking suspicion that the Qantas offshoot Jestar sorry Jet Star has been created to make the poor service levels of Qantas look good by comparison.

The dumbing down of the whole service relationship between Qantas as an airline and passenger is probably a component of a cost cutting strategy in which the management have no concern other than for the bottom line and that their market reputation is of no concern as a consequence while there is inadequate competition. I can only hope that some foreign airlines with a better attitude to overall customer service will move into the Australian market and raised the benchmark of service standards .

I do not fly that often and when I do its Perth - "East" and return. For my next trip I have tried to manage flights such that I do NOT end up on one of those clapped out 747-338s or the old 767s. I nearly succeeded, and decide on VB to avoid the ageing fleet.

Bill

I may be up a completely wrong tree here, but I've got to wonder just how regular these sorts of incidents have been historically, and how much of it is a beat-up (unintentional or otherwise) of 'business as usual'. What sort of change has there been in incidents as far as CASA is concerned? Is it a significant change, and has QANTAS really gone so far downhill, or has there been some skillful media manipulation going on somewhere? Is there a stealth campaign going on from trade unionists concerned about the off-shoring of engineering & maintenance jobs?

Or I could just be a conspiracy nutter. Anyone have access to historical CASA data? Crikey? Guys? Has it REALLY changed that much, or are we just noticing it more?

Lower maintenance standards are not my only concern with Qantas.
The attitude of the ground staff is atrocious on a regular basis.
Last year leaving Australia through Sydney, the woman at the transit bus would not let me past
because my boarding pass had no baggage tags attached.
"We always stick the tags to the boarding pass cover and you must have them" she asseted.
It turns out the both my tags and those of my partner were attached to her boarding pass
and she had gone through 20minutes earlier.
Of course this is all MY fault as I am the customer.
The 15 minutes sorting this out made my connection very difficult, but it wasn't to a Qantas flight and JAL were much more accomodating.
Oh, and the two guys at the transit counter when I arrived were still there when I left - but at least they were ready to manage without their luggage tags on their boarding passes too.
Another time I was told that my seat was not where I preferred as 'other more important passengers must have checked in'. etc. etc.
