Sham oozed that night. But I reckon Bishop is from the same mould of contrived image over substance. As the face of the party she works the electorate and lobs up to parliament to deliver the rhetoric in a theatrical production. If staff shortages that are turning pollies into parrots then pay them more peanuts. I tend to think its a case of political parties being short on committed professionals able to communicate the collective message. The country really deserves better in these times and political parties should be recruiting professionally astute individuals capable of being the genuine article. I wasted quite a few good lines, or what I deluded myself into thinking were good lines - on some dud politicians in my time but in my view it would be inappropriate to trot those out for others or for myself. That's the moral contract you enter into when you write for someone else.
