Telstra having free reign over this is a terrifying prospect. Their mismanagement of their own infrastructure is truly mind boggling - I live in a (near) inner city suburb in Perth, almost smack in middle between the city and Fremantle, and I cannot get broadband. We are on a pair gain line, and its technically impossible to get a wired broadband connection, AND Telstra point-blank refuse to upgrade our line. According to the ISP we tried to sign-up to, they reject 6 or more applications a week because of this problem - and amazingly, some applicants can be in a brand new suburb/land development!

I tried raising this problem with ACCC & Telecommunications Ombudsman - and both were a joke. Completely useless, gutless, toothless tigers. Local & Federal politicians - little better; but only little, at least (??) they put me on their list of aggrieved broadband wannabes.

Though until there's a will to make Telstra meet its infrastructure commitments, it doesn't take a fortune teller to see that many, many people are going to be short changed in this process if they're left to their own devices on this.

Oh dear the Howard legacy. It appears the government may have little option but to hand the NBN project to that privatised monopoly Telstra. Whatever happens the taxpayers will be shelling out to the tune of four billion dollars to get the project up and running. I do remember a time when a publicly owned Telstra funded such projects from its revenue, and still managed to pay the government a dividend. But times have changed. We will now reap what was sown in the age of the neos, cons and libertarians. Careful the chickens don't crap on you as they come home to roost, particularly those of you in the commentariat, who cheered long and hard for the sale of Telstra.
