The reason for the uncertainty under present law is precisely that, though judicial interpretation in lower courts had defined a 'lawful' abortion as one done where the life/ physical/mental well being of the mother were threatened by the pregnancy, that a pregnancy could ever be said to pose such a threat could not be sustained when the evidence was examined, and in these days of evidence based medicine, that position was simply untenable.<br />There are groups like Dr De Costa's using mifepristone ( RU 486 ) but cloaked in secrecy, often refusing to divulge the protocols they are following.<br />Several deaths amongst young and fit women overseasas, well as significant morbidity, particularly when women in relatively remote areas are left to abort at home, have been attributed to a failure to adhere to protocols by abortion clinics.
