In McCain defence he did say ‘No, no , no, no, he is a decent family man etc’. He clearly is very uncomfortable with some Republicans (the racist and prejudiced). Must feel a bit sorry for him.

I think the most offensive thing is not the odd racist crazy at various rallies around the country (though they ARE offensive in the extreme), it is the likes of Frank Rich of the NY Times going feral and basically portraying McCain rallies as something akin to a skin head, Hitler Youth rally. Those descriptors are my words not his, (he actually uses “Weimar-like rage”).
Talk about way over-the-top reaction.

I hear what you are saying and of course I am not suggesting that Obama is 'encouraging' any of this fringe hatred. Of course he would not do that. It is just that i am disappoined that at times, when he has had the opportunity to 'discourage' some of it, he has chosen not to, for whatever reason. Similar to his silence regarding all the 'coded' message attacks on his real opponent, Hillary Clinton, during the primaries. But then again, Hillary did not cover herself in glory either with her silence when the boot was on the other foot.

i haven't had a chance to review the vision of mccain speaking to supporters at some of his "town hall" meetings, like that mature woman who said she couldn't back obama because "he's an arab" but i wonder if mccain actually stood up and said "mr obama is NOT an arab, that is a fallacy and you are wrong to believe it".

does anyone know if mccain actually stood in front of his supporters and said that, in such forthright terms, or did he blather on with platitudes and waffle with only saying obama was "a decent man" and no one they need fear?

until mccain stands up and says that sort of thing in front of the lies his supporters shout out during these meetings, the man does nothing to "tap back" into his "decency" but only oilily sidesteps confronting the lies with actual truth. surely the sign of a man at the head of a desperate party, worried only about losing an election and not about bringing the country together to deal with the issues that their powerbase must deal with in their daily lives.

James, the difference is that McCain, and especially Palin, have been revving-up their supporters to express a visceral dislike of Obama. They have used coded racist language about his ‘difference’ and ‘otherness’.

Obama”s negative messages have focused on McCain’s temperamental suitability (“erratic”) and hints that he is too old - tough stuff but legitimate. Obama has done nothing to encourage the abusive stuff mentioned in your post - in contrast, the stuff that McCain is trying to backtrack on are raw expressions of his campaign’s coded messages.

Guy also mentions that he thinks McCain has 'tapped back' into his 'decency' via telling a few odd crazies at a few rallies to cool it, to cease and desist with their mad rantings. How kind of you Guy. Do you think Obama will tell his supporters to do the same? say for exampe, the supporters who turn up wearing "Palin is a C..." t-shirts?
