I doubt Americans believe there is enough money in the debt till to keep pulling out hundreds of billions more for this that and the other. McCain has made it clear that he is not interested in a respectable defeat even if that helps the Republicans to maintain a sizable representation in Congress. So McCain is going to wriggle on the hook for all he is worth (ie not much) but the more he wriggles the greater the overall defeat will be.

Yep, I think you are right. McCain may well be done and soon enough people will be using the "put a fork in him he's done" cliche. Isn't that political cliche always rolled out a few weeks out?

After clarifying that the $300 billion was not "new money" are you saying that Mccain is now claiming that some of it will have to be??

I think you are probably right about Obama yet again being caught out in a tactical sense but really, it matters not. Just like with our go-around last year, it doesn't matter what the 'older man" says, no one is listening and the other guy is not "him".
