I agree that the "that one" remark was not racist but it is tailor-made to become a catchphrase. There are already Obama campaign style T-shirts that substitute 'ThatOne' for Obama's name. It also reminds me of the Little Britain character whose constant refrain was "I want that one". That too could become an unofficial catchphrase of the Obama campaign.

Any enterprising T-shirt printers out there?

Another bullseye from Guy. The only minor miss was the claim that the McCain debate policy of a $300 billion mortgage buy-out was in addition to the existing $700 billion House rescue plan. Apparently the McCain camp says today that the $300 billion is to be taken from the $700 billion. As I said, minor, and certainly McCain did not make that clear during the debate. Maybe he had no idea until clarification from his camp later?

Bravo Guy - your campaign contributions are without peer. If only one could say the same about sites such as the Huff Po. Talk about a decline in 'standards'.

Cheers

Aspects of Rundle's take on this campaign remind me of 'Kevin 07'. One of Kev's central strategies was to 'not frighten the horses' while his opponent looked more and more irrelevant. It doesn't make for the kind of candidate that Rundle might long for, but the second debate showed that it's a winning strategy.

McCain looked old and cranky and he's being partnered by a young fool. Obama is looking young and steady and being partnered by an experienced operator who knows when to hold and when to fold.

This side of another outside catastrophe that actually works for McCain, Obama would have to work very hard to lose.

John James, I think that would be too adolescent for most people but I can see that you might like it.

At this point of the campaign, less than four weeks out from polling day, it is a time to stand back for a moment and see what Obama has achieved. Here is an African-American, born into a low-income single-parent family, who is on the verge of being elected to the Presidency at the age of 47 and in his first term as a Senator. He is not even mainstream within the black community, with his Hawaiian and Indonesian childhood, although that has probably worked for him in terms of learning how to appeal to white voters.

On the 'lucky' side he has had the ideal circumstances for an 'opposition' politician - a Presidency of unequaled stupidity and disaster topped off by a perfectly timed and massive economic crisis combined with a lacklustre opponent who has no hint of starpower (the attempts of McCain and Palin to channel Ronald Reagan have been pathetic in the extreme) and no coherent alternative. Even the weather has generally been kind to him - eg at the Denver stadium.

Nevertheless, when he is elected it will rightly be seen as an achievement of historic proportions and a major turning point in the history of the USA.

While "that one" is being promoted as the most memorable moment the thing that stuck with me was Obama's repeated claim that McCain's tax cut will give an average of $700,000 to Fortune 500 CEOs. That struck me as remarkably obscene and McCain never attempted to deny or defend it. That has been a pattern in the debates so far: Obama (and Biden in his debate) makes stinging attacks and all too often McCain fails to come up with any defence.

Given the current standing of corporate America, my guess is that attack resonated strongly with the American viewers, including Palin's Mr and Mrs Sixpack.

"How about just 'The One', Dave, with a picture of Paris Hilton and Bridget Bardot blowing kisses!"

Paris Hilton isn't that amazing, and Bardot is showing her age these days. How about Sophie Marceau and Emmanuelle Béart? This election has seen an unfortunate lack of attractive French starlets.

It's especially amazing and unlikely considering a year ago everyone knew that the Democratic nominee for President would be Hillary Clinton. Obama had to defeat the Clintons and the DLC in order to become the Democratic nominee. That alone is an achievement worth mentioning again and again.
