If you guys could pause from slagging off Fairfax for two seconds, maybe you could hire some of its soon-to-be-departing subs to pick to catch errors like the following take on the word “ecstasies”:

On Belmont University’s main drag where hundreds had gathered with their wares, their literature, their arguments and their crazy sh-t, for the second Presidential debate a young Obama kid was going into “extacies” over the right to life stall.

I like Crikey and I am a pretty loyal reader. However, I am a busy person and I steal away time from my other priorities to read the latest edition. Guy Rundle thinks he is writing for some self-indulgent blog than for an email news service. Given that Crikey is the first out after the US presidential debate, a subscriber might expect a little news coverage and analysis. Or, am I expecting too much? I would be happier if you send Rundle back to creative writing class and put someone else on the campaign trail? I think he would be too.

Time magazine's Mark Halperin marked the debate as B+ for Obama and B for McCain. That seems fairly accurate to me. Obama got a small Intrade boost and now stands at 71.3.

McCain tried to introduce a game-changer - a proposal to buy up actual mortgages (ie not the mortgage securities that the $700 billion bailout is going to buy) and then re-issue them on easier terms. This is a very expensive proposal but McCain made no attempt to cost it. Post-debate, two trillion plus estimates are being bandied around.

Once economists and the media get around to analysing it fully it is likely to be dismissed as totally unaffordable pork. In the debate itself McCain made a pretty poor job of selling it and by the end it was quite forgotten and McCain failed to even refer to it. A 'non-core' promise perhaps?

Ah yeah Randall, if you noticed, Crikey came out while the debate was in progress, so a little hard to analyse it - which is why it was covered on the liveblog. Rundle’s article was news and analysis of the 24 hours or so leading up to the debate.

I enjoy Guys writing, but can’t help thinking the greed thing is the elephant in the room. Sure Wall Street types don;t go to war with the peky injuns these days. They don’t have to they’ve got the land. Instead they profit indirectly and directly from wars and enviromental degradation, etc etc. . I don’t think they are any worse than 19th C railroad barons but probably no better either. Is Blackwater a public company?, Haliburton is I think! But greed isn’t probably the full story, I reckon insecurity/fear should also get a mention. But let’s not let ourselves of the hook so easily please. Rudd should be commended for making such an unsaleable, (but at least half true) comment in the first place.

I wonder if the 90 year old woman who has been paying off her house for 38 years and shot herself last week was greedy?

I listened to some of the debate and watched some of it. What strikes me is how old McCain is and how he kept harking back to the good old days of 1983 and then telling Obama to get over the Bush administration. Wasn't Bush's daddy the VP in 1983 when the US were pallin around with Saddam Hussein while helping them blow Iran to bits and cause about 2 million deaths?

Reagan was the second worst president the US had, just ahead of Bush the smaller, and McCain is showing the same senility that Reagan did.

1983? How is whining about something he did in 1983 going to solve the problems of the lack of effective controls and lack of manufacturing in the west going to solve the problems for the likes of the 90 year old.

On another note. Bush's worst nightmare just came true with a judge ordering the release of 17 Uighars in Gitmo without charge or trial for the past 6.5 years and what's more ordered them to be taken to the mainland to his court.

Woe is McCain who thought that the habeas corpus case was the worst in US history.

If Obama doesn't win after the bizarre performance of Sarah "wink wink' Palin then we would have to assume that Americans have collectively gone to a very dark place or abandoned all reality. A dodering old fool who can't remember what he said the day before combined with some Alaskan crazy-both as dim as is s**t and neither ever presenting an actual policy must surely result in an Omama landslide.

So why am I increasingly worried that McCain will win and the Republicans will tinker with either voters as they turn up to cast their vote or those blessed voting machines which even the makers now agree can be faulty and make thousands of votes vanish ?. Possibly because the iverseeing of those machines is done by a hard right Republican owned company.

Can Bush and all who sailed with him allow a Democratic president to win ?. I don't think so. Imagine the ills that would be uncovered and the queue for former republican officials to go to county jails.

McCain should be now hiring a food taster as all this stuff is just window dressing then-we should steel ourselves for a new Master of the Universe-step forward Sarah Palin-ruler of the world.
