Very well said. Why does Australia need three tiers of government? I dare say it was in the Constitution. It is an expensive anachronism and costs the tax-payer a fortune. If and when the Federal Government gets around to a referendum about the monarchy another referendum asking the people if they still wanted state governments, could be added. The premiers , people like John Brumby would have hysterics, knowing the voters would arse him and his cohorts out of the crooked and cushy jobs they have. And it is well known that at Federal level politics are semi-crooked. (John Howard and his ilk) At state level politics becomes a sordid exercise in venal squalor. Each State Premier has his right hand permanently out behind his back pocket: palm upwards, ready to receive the cash which will be arriving in a permanent torrent. Then we have councils. They too are prone to crookedness. The very least we can do is to shaft States' Parliaments.
