She got away with it because she was correct.

The essential premise of this article that Paulson is fixing up a mess he (and Bush) caused is extraordinarily ignorant of the facts.

Paulson’s response has largely been well regarded.

What will do in Obama, if anything,is the left wing loon element…… on display here

Palin's comment that Mae and Mac have "gotten too big and too expensive to taxpayers" (misquoted by Rundle unless he was referencing another quote unknown to both mankind and Google) can be taken to mean one of two things, either she believes that prior to the bailout Mae and Mac were government entities, which has been objectively wrong since 1968, or she believes the bailout of Mae and Mac is too expensive for the taxpayers. If she believes the latter she is wrong, if she believes the former it is an opinion expressed in very imprecise language that can lead to exactly this kind of confusion.

For the record, and with the full, correct, quote at hand, it looks as though Palin believes that Mae and Mac are too big for taxpayer money to sustain, and that the McCain/Palin administration will make them both smaller in order to cut down on taxpayer costs. Still, even without Rundle's mangling of the quote it is a very imprecise statement. I suppose this is the price of a political culture dominated by the soundbyte/gaffe system of reporting and campaigning.

The cultural disdain of a Left for Palin as exemplified by Daniel on this occasion.

His 'argument' commences with "if' which at least is perhaps a little less dishonest than some of his ilk.

Rundle has given you the quote Daniel. Palin has supposedly said of FM&FM that they have been 'a burden on the taxpayer for too long' as 'reported' by Rundle.

Is she correct or incorrect? Is Rundle correct or incorrect in his quotes?

Presumably you can't see Wall St either.

"Ergo"........ur a working class dingbat as well?

Guy, one does not shoot one's dog over opinion polls, unless perhaps one is the young Malcolm Turnbull. I think you're just dyspeptic after failing to convert with the Ukrainian model/financial industry expert.

I think the larger problem here is that finance jargon does not lend itself to simple soundbite-type populism. I mean you can whine about Wall Street fat cats all you want - that part is natural and almost a moral obligation at this point - but you're still obliged to say what you would do about it, and how, and do so in a way that is readily grasped by Joe Mortgage, Iowa. That's not Obama's strong suit, he's better at talking in academic terms about abstractions. But yes, he has to get some traction on this ridiculous fiasco, or else.. where's my dog again?

"She got away with it because she was correct."

If Palin implied that Mae and Mac were subsidized by the US Federal Government up until 2008, she would be wrong. Mac and Mae were government agencies from 1938 until 1968, when they were converted into private companies. If Mae and Mac were still government agencies, nobody would be talking about 'bailouts' or 'Government intervention into the private sector' in reference to Mae and Mac.

You can't see Wall Street from Alaska, ergo Sarah Palin is not an expert on Wall Street.

I will add to the confusion.....from a 1996 report from the Congressional Budget Office:

http://www.cbo.gov/doc.cfm?index=13&type=0&sequence=3A

"If one measures the costs of the GSEs (Government sponsored enterprise = FM&FM) as the annual change in the value of the government's credit enhancement and the annual return on previously invested capital, then the average annual cost to the government--though highly volatile--averaged $7.8 billion per year during the 1993-1995 period. If measured as the estimated funding cost advantage that the GSEs receive, the benefit is currently worth $6.5 billion annually. "
