Some very good points Bernard. Certainly Turnbull can light a fire under Rudd. I welcome a real opposition. What does worry me is your description of both men as having immense egos, being incredibly intelligent, self made men pata ti pata ta. Will this be a re-run of the old adage “When two dogs fight over a single bone, a third one often comes up and snatches it.” Will Australia just end up as the bone?” We need inspired thinking, we need to get off our collective arses and start building a real nation. Not a people content to ebb with the tide. We need the very best we can get. It is more than time to get it.

Once again John James sails, with an un-naturally heavy cargo of the credo of Roman Catholicism’s dead weight; listing hard to the right. Once again he comes out with yet more fundamentalist , Jesuit crap, (BTW: does he know his spiritual leader is a chain smoker? Naughty, naughty, naughty little Popoe). The sad part about James’s comments is their awesome predictability. Bernard, the only time I see ego and arrogance is an issue in politics is when it’s not accompanied by vision and energy. The former implies intellect and the latter is fundamental to implement the vision. Nor do I subscribe to the equally juvenile and irrelevant notion that you need to LIKE a leader. Turnbull and Rudd have both vision and energy in spades without making them, necessarily, congenial dinner/drinking companions. Unless I’m mistaken, I reckon we’re in for a more constructive period in federal politics now that we’ve got a better match-up with Rudd and Turnbull. And they shouldn’t need to find time to tolerate fools when important matters of state need to be addressed.

I did like Malcolm Turnbull's speech gave this about rented flats and being short of money. It was very similar to ones he gave when he used to attended meetings of the Maroubra Branch of the A.L.P.

That Turnbull is urbane and intelligent is undeniable, but that he can connect with ordinary Australians, with those ‘Howard battlers’ and their concerns, is more questionable. I saw Abbott debate Turnbull several times during the Republican campaign, and I thought Abbott vastly superior. Turnbull was unable to pull his republican confreres into a cohesive unit and in the end he and his ‘roundheads’ were routed.
Turnbull, like Hewson, Peacock,Kennett and Bailleau belong to that wing of the Tories who believe in nothing, except power for its own sake. By contrast, Howard and Abbott are toughened political street fighters. In politics, great leaders are born out of defeat, of having to pick themselves up and get back into the fight. So I hope Turnbull can push the ‘patrician’ within to the background.
In the long term, Abbo for me. He would take the fight to the forces of darkness and political nihilism , the political Left, with a vigour not seen before.
The Liberal party should watch what is unfolding in the United States as Palin electrifies the Republican heartland, middle America. Its the conservative base whom the party must pull in, not those chardonnay sipping Tories who are indifferent to the historical revisionism of the Left, who dont grasp the real nature of the family, who are indiffernt to the plight of the unborn, and who shrink in the face of attacks on freedom and democracy from militant totalitarianism ans Islam and its apologists, the Left- liberals.
