if the President can’t make paradigm shifts then who can?

What would the world be like if John McCain became President IN Jan 2001?

The only choice worse than Bush might have been……Al Gore.
Every cloud has a silver lining though…… we might have been spared The Conveniently Lucrative Lie….

It is almost comical watching the Left liberal commentariat desperately searching for something, anything, to try and blow Palin out of the water. Comical because it is such a contrast with the public statements by the Obama team and their supporters, like Rundle and esteemed Crikey readers like Birchall, Sanderson et al, who keep saying Palin is nothing, just a 'religious fundamentalist blip' on the horizon, a small town non-entity. You get the picture of the sheer terror gripping the Left as, to quote Charles Krauthammer from the Washington Post Writers Group ,"the United States Democrats.." realise that " in a presidential race impossible to lose, they're behind."

For the record, John, the closest I have come to your description of my 'public statements' is to say that, if McCain becomes President, it is very likely that Palin will be the usual VP non-entity as this is the VP's usual role. Cheney is the exception that proves the rule. This is a reflection of the US presidential system rather than a criticism of the person occupying the chair. I don't know about "the sheer terror gripping the Left" but, speaking for myself, I'm certainly not terrified of a McCain victory. I would prefer Obama to win but I accept he may not. I think that the power of the President to make paradigm changes is, in practice, severely constrained, whoever is in power.
