Right on Michael. I'm sure women everywhere would like to thank John for his instruction on how we are to feel when we terminate a pregnancy. Truly it is a load off our collective shoulders to have our potentially complicated emotional response to this dictated by a man, who can never experience it for himself, but who apparently has no qualms in telling us how to feel about it.

Apart from a yet another cheap shot at Peter Costello in Costello-enemy territory does John Armstrong, 'philosopher' have anything useful or otherwise to contribute to an extraordinary debate on legislation allowing on demand abortions up to 24 weeks gestation and functionally probably longer and abortions with 2 supportive medical signatories to even later gestational periods?

No

'...immense gravity and immense regret.'
Why do you say this? Maybe for some women the decision is straightforward. That's not to say it isn't painful or unpleasant or difficult, but why is it always cast in such a hand-wringing fashion and laden down with regret?
Some women decide to have their breasts off when they've got cancer. A painful decision but they weigh up the alternatives, decide, and get on with it. Isn't it possible that the decision to abort can be reached in a similar manner?
Easy for me to talk - I'm not a woman - but there's an awful lot of male opinionating in this debate and I'm far from certain it's needed.

Abortion is about each individual woman knowing whether or not the time is right for her to give birth to a child. The community must accept that informed women are reasonable, responsible people who are likely to make good mothers and provide caring homes for their children if their choice of time is not over-ridden by outside pressures and controls. Uninformed strangers should not attempt to interfere with the ability of women to control their own fertility. Everyone can prevent abortion need by making sure that all females are sexually educated from an early age and have the means to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy.
