The Vietnam War-in which a million Vietnamese died needlessly was begun because of the phoney "domino effect" whereby country by country would fall to communism unless checked ( no doubt a theory James would have prescribed to at the time). It didn't happen. Why does James find an excuse for every ghastly war in which thousands die and those who perpetuate the war are never wrong ?. It was a vicious amoral war against a civilian population, employing mass civilian bombings, the deliberate destruction of agriculture to starve the north, and an utter indifference to the means in pursuit of a geopolitical end. Nothing could illustrate the conscious evil of the ADA, the NCC, Santamaria, the mainstream Catholic church and all who sailed in her than James's remark. Philip Coorey jumped to the wrong conclusion in the SMH today when he wrote that Turnbull's week-long European holiday is a subtle hint that he won't challenge next week. I'd say Turnbull has taken the last chance to re-charge his batteries and spend some quality time with his wife before ascending the full-on leadership job.
