Good grief where does Neil James come up with this stuff. The Vietnam War-in which a million Vietnamese died needlessly was begun because of the phoney "domino effect" whereby country by country would fall to communism unless checked ( no doubt a theory James would have prescribed to at the time). It didn't happen. Why does James find an excuse for every ghastly war in which thousands die and those who perpetuate the war are never wrong ?.

Neil James parrots the usual crap about the Vietnam war. It was a vicious amoral war against a civilian population, employing mass civilian bombings, the deliberate destruction of agriculture to starve the north, and an utter indifference to the means in pursuit of a geopolitical end. Nothing could illustrate the conscious evil of the ADA, the NCC, Santamaria, the mainstream Catholic church and all who sailed in her than James's remark. He still doesn't understand that Vietnam is the place where the west finally lost all moral authority.

I note that Dick Smith has still not answered this question -why is he pursuing the Tasmanian National Parks Association for legal costs when he can well afford to absorb the $50,000 himself?

Secondly, Greens sources have told me for sometime now that they are not happy with Bob Brown's refusal to criticise Smith.

I think John Goldbaum is right about Brendan Nelson exiting the leadership. Philip Coorey jumped to the wrong conclusion in the SMH today when he wrote that Turnbull's week-long European holiday is a subtle hint that he won't challenge next week. I'd say Turnbull has taken the last chance to re-charge his batteries and spend some quality time with his wife before ascending the full-on leadership job.

Not only that, but does Brendan Nelson mean he'll still be the most unpopular opposition leader in history when he says he "can assure that in two years'time, [he'll] be in this position", according to the Philip Coorey piece you mentioned?
