I've been reflecting that since getting involved in politics from 1992 here in NSW the best outcomes for environmental management have been during a 'hung' parliament 92-95, and narrow ALP majority 95 to say 97. After that it was Lab-Lib developer money politics all the way and the little people and their quality of life can get stuffed.

I do find it ironic that once you get past the socially conservative values debate small n Nats and small g Greens have alot in common in terms of the ideals of zoning for agriculture over concrete suburbs, healthy rivers, carbon trading, loathing of multinational big business, economic nationalism etc. I would say this is a 21C trend that will grow as climate shift bites deeper and farmers markets spread in metro areas.

I am normally a Labor voter but voted Green and Independent this time (in WA). Whatever happens Carpenter has to go and his toxic and nasty chief advisor Keiron Murphy with him. Carpenter is a hopeless politician, doesn't listen (only to the obnoxious Murphy) and is poor at getting the message across. Get in MacTiernan as leader and get rid of Ripper, Kobelke, McGinty, Ravlich and Roberts for a start. Clear out the numerous advisors and some of the politicised public service heads. The role of the media in all this has to be scrutinised too. Brian Burke is a favourite bogeyman for journos but the voters are over him now and the fact that some MP's still talk to him - who cares. The voters in Kalgoorlie certainly didn't. The West Australian is a disgrace and little more than a Liberal Party propoganda rag. Even ex Liberal leader Matt Birney got stuck into it for it's appallingly biased reporting and not just in this election - Rudd was portrayed by them as something worse than Hitler. The Nats leader seems a decent bloke and certainly a lot more money needs to go to rural towns, especially for staff housing, but I wonder how the Metro voters will feel when the enormous amounts of extra funding going to the bush means that their hospitals and schools can't run properly?
