a simpler answer might be, rather than taking someone elses system , removing fixed terms. as to voluntary voting no way to vote (or at least show up) should be a responsiblity as well as a right we carry enough passengers as it is

But if you go to Google video and watch Enron:Smartest Guys in the Room you will see a sobering example of the California recall of Gray Davis defeated by Big Arnie. It worked like this - Enron traders bought the public electricity grid - then manipulated surges and shortfalls in generation of power to force skyrocketing spot prices. There were blackouts, traffic lights failed, fatal car crashes etc etc. Most of it screen jockey pricing manipulations of the new market rules. Political meltdown followed and the recall of 'ineffective' Gray Davis.

Enron's corruption was revealed in other way ways later and the 8th biggest (?) corporation in the USA crashed and burned in about 21 days apparently.

No wonder Big Arnie even as a Republican successor is a huge supporter of renewables and solar ... so another Enron doesn't happen to him!?

This kind of foaming at the mouth panic is not helpful. Michael seems to have confused himself by first arguing for "a new parliament" (presumably because neither major party is competent) , then proposing a "recall" style constitutional amendment to abbreviate fixed parliamentary terms (presumably so that the Labor government could be recalled and replaced by the LNP coalition). Out of the frying pan and into the fire. There's not much disagreement that the Iemma government has performed poorly but the sensible long-term solution is to let proper governmental processes run their course. The sacking of the Whitlam government in 1975 was extremely divisive and bitter. It damaged the incumbent governor-general and created a wholly undesirable precedent. Let's hope we learnt from that. Governor Marie Bashir is indeed well respected but she would not remain so were she to attempt a "Philip Game" type dismissal. Sir Philip's actions were the result of perceived illegality by the Lang government. At present there is no parallel to that. Give Nathan Rees and his new team an opportunity to improve performance and keep their jobs. I have no doubt they will do their very best to restore public confidence and support before the election in early 2011.
