I thought Paul Brent from FSANZ covered all of this in his article on Monday Crikey...
See http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/foodmatters/gmfoods/chiefscientistrespon3993.cfm

Its funny that the system that is used for generating medical drug information is identical and yet in the hysteria about a certain sort of crop breeding we think this isn't sufficient. I'll just repeat that - WA and Tasmania are calling for stricter regulation of GM food than medical drugs...

I'm just glad we don't have a bunch of populist politicians pandering to the claims of minority lobby groups running these states (rolls eyes)

Katherine Wilson says: "One of these (independent studies) found evidence of organ toxicity in rats fed the GM corn. The peer-reviewed study, published in the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, is rejected by FSANZ, which says the study "did not identify any public health and safety concerns associated with the genetic modification used to produce" the insect-resistant corn"
FSANZ' position is supported by a more recent study in which an independent expert panel reassessed both the original data and the reanalysis: "The Expert Panel concludes that the Séralini et al. reanalysis provided no evidence to indicate that MON 863 was associated with adverse effects in the 90-day rat study"
(reference: Food and Chemical Toxicology Volume 45, Issue 11, November 2007, Pages 2073-2085)
Well, here we go again.

Its not the 'GM' that's the problem.

Wake up, everyone: our food supply systems are stuffed. Never mind the regulation, never mind if one particular GM variety will kill you or not.

Buy local. And probably by organic. But its more complicated than that. Read 'Ominvore's Dilemma' by Michael Pollen - that's a good start, if you're interested.

If the GM crops deliver measurable increase in yields, if they can be grown without the risk of cross pollination and if they do not give multinationals control of the food chain - then and only then - maybe - just maybe they are worth a look. If they are so good how come the poorer countries are not growing them and selling their bountiful produce to us?
