Stephen Downes article rings very true to me. I have read the SMH for some 51 years and feel very possessive of 'MY' Sydney Morning Herald. I feel the same way about MY ABC.
This could be because I am an only child, but, I think many other people are feeling the same way towards management at Fairfax. There are not many true Australian icons left.....please do not allow another to fall.

I like to own shares in companies I do business with.

Yesterday I sold my Fairfax shares which I have held for several years. The principal reason was the treatment of Mike Carlton.

I now feel that my choice of daily newspaper has been liberated. Love's lost.

As the sales manager of a successful local newsaper in a highly competitive market with three other newspapers, I understand at a grass roots level, the importance of reader loyalty which secures the advertising revenue.
Mess with the readers then you become a sales leaflet, whilst there are a number of highlty successful sales leaflets stuffed into my letterbox each week, my team ( editorial and sales) proudly work for a newspaper.
It is time that some owners appreciate that owning a newspaper is a delicate balance of advertising and editorial, neither of which neither is a measurable science, and therefore it should be remembered that the fortunes of even the the most respected and profitable publications, have been founded on readership will take a very long time to win them back once lost.

I agree with Stephen's point, but the worrying thing for me was that when the journos were on strike, the paper looked pretty much like it "always" does. This suggests to me that there have been many tiny changes over a long period of time and that the Herald we once knew has slowly morphed into a bunch of cuts and pastes from many overseas papers.
