Mark, an Oreo is a type of biscuit, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oreo if you wish. But given the context, I think all that's necessary here is to point out that an Oreo is black on the outside, white on the inside. I've heard mainland Chinese describe Overseas Chinese as Banana's for much the same reason.

Fair enough indeed. None of the K-town linguistmob know, so we'd be quite interested if it was a colleague, but understand about public implications.

I work in the NT in linguist-related work. I'd be interested in knowing more about the suspended linguist as no linguists I've spoken to here have heard about this. Any hints?

Sounds like the book store fella was what some Territorians call a coconut - black on the outside, white on the inside.
Beyond Rage, what I do find interesting is the gob-smackingly arrogant assumption by our politicians and bureaucrats (and an alarmingly high proportion of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal middle class people - Noel Pearson among them) that whitefella culture and aspirations are, of course, what all Aboriginal people aspire to - doesn't everyone want to be wage slaves and in major debt (mortgages) for their whole lives? Of course they do! It's the peak of human aspiration, the creme de la creme of culture.....
The NTER (Intervention) review is being done by Pollanna Consulting - mission statement "We tell you what you pay to hear". An NT linguist has been suspended from his employment for daring to challenge the usefulness of the review - as there has been no attempt made to speak to Aboriginal people or explain things in their own language. Anyone who looks like they might challenge the NTER is being silenced - either through fear of losing their jobs, or through being ignored during the "consultation" process. Aren't we supposed to be living in a democracy?
Lastly, one school of thought suggests that rage and depression are aspects of the same emotion - that depression is rage turned on the self. The NTER and the NT Shires local government system have between them removed all vestiges of Aboriginal control of their own lives. No bloody wonder Aboriginal people are angry.

Hello Onionista - I would need the permission of the suspended person before i could give you any hints as to identity! Don't want to make the person concerned more of a target.

"onya" Wednesday Kennedy (I do not know who you are!!). I do not know what an Oreo is either (see Mark Duffet); nor do I know who Ellen and Portia are - I have heard of Oprah! But I have read bits of "Rage" and I am thrilled that Germaine Greer is making us squirm. What has happened to the review of the NT Intervention?? What has happened to "Sorry Day"?? Why can we not change the constitution and at last make a treaty with the First Australians?

Did I miss something in the story here? I'm unsure which part allows you to disregard the book store clerk's point of view; the fact he doesn't look aboriginal or is possibly gay? The fact he agrees with Noel Pearson? Or maybe the fact that he's abroiginal?

He sounds angry to me. Telling anyone who'll listen not to buy Greer's book. Perhaps she's right and that's why he is the way he is but who are we to question him because his looks and corresponding politics don't match your idea of aboriginality

The submission of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA) to the review of the NT Intervention is worth reading. Links are at http://laborview.blogspot.com/2008/08/indigenous-communities-healing-approach.html
