The politicians who want to punish parents for not ensuring their kids go to school today, stayed silent while thousands of kids were denied access to school through 2000 to 2003.
We spent 6 months haranguing state and federal government to allow 2 primary school age girls in Maribyrnong Detention Centre , to be allowed to go to school in 2003. They were allowed to attend school in November 4 weeks before it closed for the holidays.
So much for the government's much lauded 'evidence based' approach to policy making which has just gone out the window with this proposal. There is already a 'trial' of income management in Cannington, the evaluation of which was supposed to lead to an assessment of whether this was an effective approach to helping 'dysfunctional' families, given that there is no other evidence to support it. Now the government's rushing to legislate to tie benefits to school attendance. Shame on you Rudd and co. This is a policy disgrace. Maybe the Coalition could block this one in the Senate!
