Michael, I agree, totally disinterested. I loathe the way the word hero in bandied about. Someone who risks their life to save another is a hero, not someone who trains for years and then wins a medal.

I like the handicap idea, maybe we could put jockeys on sprinters etc.

How pleasing it is that that tawdry specatcle of the Olympics is finally over although I suppose now we will be treated to weeks of "hero" rubbish. If these games were actualy fair it would be reasonable but how on earth can they be considered fair when small third world countries must compete with the well-heeled west ?. Talk about "level playing field"-not !. All those small countries are just a backdrop for the main players in a patronising attempt to look inclusive. Time for these games to be paired back to something more dignified. If every other sport "handicaps" competitors, why aren't the Olympians handicapped in that some obviously have greater advantage ?.

And just watching the TV news tonight-sorry Kevin but not "every man, woman and child" is in awe of the Olympians-I'm totally disinterested and I bet I'm not the only one.

Why doesn't the Sunday Canberra Times' Andree Stephens (the editor) tell readers today (31/8) in her page 1 splash about the GG, spilling to a double page spread inside, that up until a few months ago, she was the long-serving speech writer for H.E. Governor-General Michael Jeffrey? This is a highly relevant piece of information given Andree's piece is a huge spray at the "major national/metrop" media (and News Ltd inparticular for some unspecific sin) short-changing the GG and accusing him of being pompous and out of touch. Instead, Andree devotes pages and pages (of a largely unread newspaper in the nation's capital) over to Jeffrey to attack the media, defend his years of tea, scones and country fairs -- never once telling readers "and oh...I should tell you...I was his speechwriter up until recently". What a disingenuous, unethical load of nonsense. Sycophantic crap is what it is.

This is Rural Press, don't forget. This is dumb-downed, simplistic and awfully provincial journalism at its best.

Leslie Martin, Canberra
