I know how to give Bernard Keane apoplexy. Sneak up behind him, stick your thumbs in your ears, wave your fingers around and say "Carbon Trading". The BCA report is all about negotiating with the Government for compensation; the same thing anyone would do when told of a new tax on their businesses that is supposed to, but will make no difference on global warming but probably a lot of difference to economic activity. The end result of all this carry on will be an ETS with a low carbon price per ton coz thats all that will be acceptable to business and by the way the voting public. Someone say pass on costs? Well do that in the electricity industry (which if anyone hadn't noticed is mainly the carbon polluting electricty industry in Victoria) and all those working families will vote you out in a heart beat. Then try and put in an ETS from the opposition benches. Good luck.

A couple of points in response to a good article.... In some parts of the media the debate is far from over about the science. The effort of Sixty Minutes a week ago being just one example. As for any major Australian business in the co2 emitters club declaring themselves willing and able to embrace the brave new world of carbon trading, it should be remembered the stage they operate on, is called the stock market. Such wishy washy sentiments hold no sway in a theatre where fear and greed are the motivating forces. I can imagine now, an Alan Kolher commentary on any such companie's diving share price. Rupert can declare his outfit carbon neutral by 2010 thanks to the control he exercises. We will just have to hope the government holds its nerve against the scaremongering to come. And that more of the commentariat come to realize we all exist in an environment not merely an economy.
