where this is headed? There will be Russian control of that pipeline and no U.S. missile early warning bases at Russia's door step. What the hell where the Georgians thinking and what did their U.S.military advisors wanted to achieve when they launched the first attack?

Very pleased to see some commentry from David Lookwood; someone who knows what he is talking about. The bit I find hardest to comprehend is that Georgia thought it could get away with it. Could this be a case that they have entrapped themselves, and Russia was ready and waiting for this to happen. Did Georgia, with a military budget that has increased to 30 times, and troops on the ground with the USA and a toe in NATO think that Russia, with a veto at the UN security council think Russia would just back down because Mr Bush says so?<br />As Russia is now seemingly fighting to destroy all millatry weapons stockpiles and bases in Georgia and Georgia is still fireing into Ossetia the restoration of the status quo of 6th Aug seems unlikely. David, what are your predictions for the short term should Russia destabalise the Georgian Govern, ent. I do hope that you can keep us informed of your very realist accademic analysis.
