Alex ... mate! John Dauth is a great appointment as high commissioner in London. His sexual preferences are not a public issue. And when he was doing his best to keep the royal breasts covered, all those years back, he was doing his job. Megaphone Sheridan's right on this one.

Jonathan Green: Did you edit out a paragraph or two but forget to read it through again? This item doesn't seem to have a right-to-exist otherwise.

As a lay person, I know nothing about John Dauth. But if Alex Mitchell's best news angle on this story was to draw parallels between former London diplomats' sexuality, then I'd profer Mitchel is best suited to a gig with the News Ltd tabloids and not crikey.com!

Omigod!!!

The gays are taking over!

Run for the hills! Protect the royal breasts!!!

This piece was satire, wasn't it? Crikey wouldn't actually puclish some rot unless it was an exercise in...errr...something.

Oh dear.

I'm as baffled as Alex Mitchell over Rudd’s appointment of Dauth and Fischer. Both are bottom-of-the-barrel, recycled irrelevance compared to the wealth of ambassadorial talent on, and off, the circuit. You’d imagine in unstable times the nation would strategically position astute, switched-on tacticians as our economic, trade and political advocates and watchdogs. Either the PM has exercised flawed judgement or sloppy indifference to a role that surely deserves more serious consideration? This pair of has-beens (Fischer, as a former Deputy PM and Minister for Trade admitted he was computer illiterate) should have been pensioned from the public purse long ago. If a diplomat’s role is really about maximising our nation’s international security and keeping us at the economic and commercial cutting edge I’m convinced there were far better candidates.

I can't see the harm in Alex Mitchell referencing sexual persuasions in his article. If he's stating facts, it's more concerning to note the number of sensitive prudes who reject them. I had no idea Sir Alexander (Alec) Downer was bi-sexual and I had no idea he'd ever been a prisoner-of-war; nor did I know there was once a seat or electoral division called Angas and that Downer had been made a Freeman of the City of London. All information is useful. Imagine how p**sed off I'd be if in a revived episode of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Eddie asked me who was Charles Spencer's godfather?
