Capital growth and dividends have been pathetic for as long as I can remember. I haven't done the sums but I reckon an investment in Esanda debentures 20 years ago would have provided a better after-tax return than the same amount invested in News stock and sold in the past 6 months or so. There's not many (so-called) blue chip stocks you could say that about. For all the pride we should be feeling at Rupert's success, let's not forget that he chose to abandon his Australian citizenship in pursuit of financial self-interest.
