There is no doubt the AFP have things to hide and it is time the Govt stopped all this nonsense and either give the enquiry chair more powers, or announce a Royal Commission with the appropriate requirements. It beggers belief the PM is allowing Mr Kelty to push his Government around in the fashion he is, when the vast majority of Australians want those who sought to use the Dr Haneef affair for their own political agenda, held to account. As the days go by the obvious becomes more so.

Memo Kevin Rudd: Pollies who are seen to crack down on cowboy elements in law enforcement agencies (post Bjelke Queensland is the obvious example which you'll clearly remember, also the early Bob Carr years in NSW when he set himself up as being pretty well fireproof even despite a disappointing second half to his Premiership) earn public confidence in spades. Burn Keelty, turn over a new leaf in Australian law enforcement, run it as a line about Labor's first term achievements and make it a point of contrast with Howard's paranoid response to all things middle-eastern. Then watch public confidence grow.

Unfortunately Keelty succumbed to Howard’s careless and destructive politicization of his office. Unfortunately not to defend his position is too unnatural & very difficult. It would take the fortitude of someone at the least able to fall on their sword. We are looking at polly (Prime Ministerial in this case) induced toxic fallout in Australia.
