One of the most cynical aspect sof the whole episode was that Howard and Ruddock knew that the boat people were no real threat to Australia, but also knew that Pauline and her many xenophobic followers would vote for them in droves if they played it right. Which of course they did. They tried the same with Work Choices and the "Evil Unionists," story but the trouble was most people knew someone in a union and didn't think they were particularly evil. In fact most thought they were good gals/guys.

My thanks yet again to Mungo MacCallum for an excellent piece. We need to be reminded twice a week of the dreadful behaviour of the Howard gang, who certainly confirmed my decision to resign from the Liberal Party (I left over a Jeff Kennett matter). Howard (well supported by Ruddock and Vanstone) lead a dreadful gang and was quite the worst prime minister we have had in my 40 years in Oz.

Agree, agree, agree! Never thought I would say it but after the Tampa affair I was ashamed to be an Australian. Then when Siev sunk, taking hundreds of lives, the father of four of the dead children was told he wouldn't be allowed back in Australia if he went to Indonesia to comfort his wife. He was here on a temporary visa. She, and their one remaining child were then denied permission to join him in Australia! What harm did anyone think this poor bereft woman would do to the rest of the country? Some politician said the disaster "sent a message to people smugglers". Well that was Ok then - NOT.

I don't want to appear churlish but the fact is that Mandatory Indefinite detention is not dead. It is waiting for the next boat when it will begin all over again. The detention legislation passed in 1992 to lock up those fleeing Pol Pot's killing fields is still in place.
This minister must do more than tell the immigration officials to BE NICE. With their record we cannot depend on them to exercise compassion and let people out of detention. We need laws to protect the freedom of asylum seekers while their claims are processed. Hostels instead of detention centres. We put up 2000 Vietnamese boat people in hostels when they arrived - they did not have passports and visas either. It worked then and it can work again.

Mungo: a beautifully written article: however, didn't the non brain-dead part of the electorate already know all of this. I would like to see your genius at work on some of the issues that relate to the here and now part of politics.

I'm not trying to be a nit-picker, I have all of your books, and been an admirer since the days of Nation Review. But I believe that a few paragraphs on the political system as at Thurs: 31st July would be words of wisdom. I would love to read your comments on Brendan Nelsons little act on ETS.

Cheers

To the sanctimonious and unctuous Zane: "Of course mandatory detention began under Labor, and there were already disturbing stories coming out of the detention camp at Port Hedland by the time John Howard came to power in 1996. But it was he who developed the idea as a conscious policy of government, to be pursued for political gain whatever the cost to the victims."....... of course he did...oh and "conscious"-ly...I love it!

...That great line...All thats necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. I am euphoric bathing in the afterglow of all the positive letters and Mungo's excellent piece of historical and political commentary. When they try to white wash JWH in the future, this is the article to show them.

Whatever happened to the gutsy Bahktiari family who were persecuted for daring to think that they could as a family live in Australia.

There was no need to have too much information to see that they were ethnically Hazaras and therefore unlikely to have been Pakistanis.

Once the young children escaped and weren't caught immediately however the wrath of the Howard government rained down on them for making the authorities look stupid.

They were sent to Pakistan and have since disappeared. Just to make sure they would never try to come back despite local community support they had to face a bill courtesy the government. That one instance alone was evil. I wonder if any of the family are still alive. The only good that came out of that episode is that the older boys gained something of an education courtesy of the Jesuits - no thanks to the government. That the Government could send them back to such a dangerous place and have no follow up is evil.

I am convinced the decaying carcass that was the immigration policy of the rodent Howard is attempting a Lazarus through JamesK. Like all decaying matter the odour fades as oblivion becomes final. It is truely sad there still exist in this country a minority who would push for barbed wire enclosed camps, the mental and phsical abuse of those seeking a better life and surely the most evil of all, the detention of young children who will be mentally scarred for years if not life. No thanks Mr KamesK, you keep your disgusting personal version of a concentration camp. Thank God you and your type no longer are capable of inflicting misery on these people.

I am surprised these pages are not filled with Libs supporting the actions of Ruddock and Howard as they brought a sense of shame and disgust on this countries name and reputation with their disgraceful treatment of those who in the main were seeking Australias protection. Many who went to the polls last November would have memories of those actions by Howard and his evil Ministers and voted accordingly. It is to be hoped, at least those remaining in detention will soon be able to lead something of a normal life in a country that used to be known for its compassion, got lost in the depths of political convenience for 12 years and is now returning to a policy of decency and humanitarianism. While at times Kevin Rudd plays the populace tune, there is much to like about the caring side of the man. It feels good to be Australian again.
