This is not the first time that Westpac has processed transactions twice. About 20 years ago they processed our corporate payroll twice crediting several hundred employees with two pay transactions. In the process they debited our account over $400,000, and they refused to credit the amount. As many of the receiving banks were happy to take a credit distribution to their customers, they were reluctant to process an unauthorised debit to recover the overpayment. This left us with the difficult responsibility of recovering the amount from the employees concerned, some of whom claimed immediate hardship and inability to refund the money. The whole mess took some 12 months to finally resolve with significant administrative cost to our organisation which was not recompensed.
