Gee, all this talk of reasonable compensation seems a bit unfair on the poor church. It's not like the Pope wears Prada shoes or .... oh wait. Well, it's not like the church gets massive government support for its events ....oh, hang on. Well, it's not like it's one of the wealthiest organisations on the entire planet...oh, bugger.

JamesK - do you think that the amount offered in compensation, being a max of $50,000 as dictated by teh Church/Pell's Towards Healing program, would be adequate? I doubt anyone else would.

It is a moral outrage that there hasn't been more of a moral outrage on this issue. The very bastions of moral principle in this country clearly lack moral integrity.

And don't think the Ellis case is an anomaly. The Church have directly applied (in the past couple of weeks) its outcome to the current 30+ civil actions against the Marist Order for the abuses at Marist College Canberra (70s-90s). They claim that the criminally convicted brother Kostka was a) not a teacher, b) not employed nor under any contract with Marist or the Chruch, c) had no position of authority at the school in question. The lawyers in this case are recommending that individual senior teachers be sued!!! God help Catholic school teachers in this country!

The Marist case should be seen as THE text case for the Church applying the instructions of the Pope. Somehow, I highly doubt their practices will change one iota. And yes, I USED to have faith....

The only real difference between the Catholic Church and any large corporation is the product they make and sell. Otherwise, they have the same policies and undertake the same practices, especially when under threat.

Greg Barns would be well aware that it is reasonable to assume that by now substantial offers would already have been made Ellis. But not substantial enough........

This a Rudd-like 'argybargy' about money and not much else. Pell has a duty to spend his congregations money for the greater good. Perhaps Barns already knows what that is?

Sorry did I miss it in all the hype? Where was Kruddy's disgust and Hetty's ongoing outrage at Pell et al's attitude to real live (well, dead from suicide in one case) actual victims of actual sexual crimes? Why no screaming support from the yellow press for the parents and victims seeking some kind of acknowledgement of what was done to them and their loved ones by people they trusted. After all the who haa, cant and hyperbole over some pictures where no one was abused, hurt degraded, betrayed and raped we have silence from our moral guardians while the pope's in town. Maybe artists are a softer target that sex criminals and cardinals.

Whilst it may be of some comfort to the victims that the Pope is sorry for their suffering, I consider that what The Church should really be apologising for is the manner in which it has consistently failed to address the problem. Indeed, by simply moving offenders from one church to another, as happened in the USA, the problem was made worse.
