Richard Farmer laments the Governor-General was not present at the arrival in Australia of His Holiness tPope Benedict XVI. Richard will be pleased to read the Vice-Regal notices for 17 July which will show that the Governor-General attended the Cereminal Arrival of His Holiness at Government House in Sydney; on that same morning the Governor-General will receive His Holiness at Admiralty House; the Vice Regal Notices for 20 July will show that the Governor-General attended the World Youth Day Papal Mass; and on the 21st of July the Governor-General attended the Ceremonial Departure from Australia of His Holiness.

With most of these governments, all bar two have been in power since last millennium (and in Japan’s case, the LDP have held the Prime Ministership for 50 of the last 53 years). The two governments that came to power this millennium are the best off in terms of loss of support, although not by much in the case of the US Republicans, who came to power in the early part of this millennium. Therefore, some of this could be the “it’s time” factor.
