I am surprised that neither side of Politics is pushing the peak oil (and coal) argument as the reason to introduce Carbon trading and to position Australia as a world leader in alternative energies. The last oil shock a book by a UK Journalist (Strahan I think) puts forward the issues facing the world with the peak of carbon based fuels. I highly recommend the book. It also highlights a form of carbon trading scheme called Tradeable Energy Quotas (TEQ's) that involves the allocation of an energy quota per person that is used when a person uses carbon emitting energy.

Did you know that we will soon be hitting peak peaks? By 2025, there will be no more items left for the green-types to allege that there is a looming peak.
