The statements by Father Peter Confeggi on the 6 July 2008 about the exorbitant amounts of money being spent on World Youth Day are spot on. How can the Catholic Church or the Australian public for that matter believe that this event needs such extraordinary sums of money to be a success? Ordinary hard working Catholic Australians must surely be appalled by a church that has lost touch with its laity and has abandoned those in need to spend vast sums on a papal trip and a series of events, that are detached from the relevant pressing issues of the day. Certainly our youth need faith and direction to deal with the serious problems of the 21 st century and one way to deal with those would have been to set an example by conducting this event in a modest and less expensive way. Ceremonies could have been arranged with less pomp and lavish setting. I wonder if the homeless youth of the Western Suburbs will be represented at this event, somehow I don't think so!
