Please Venise!: there is always an 'Apocalypse'! That is exactly the point. I thought Garnaud presented well yesterday but we still have little idea of how much and the details. Scare tactics will fail. I have not yet read his interim report but I will. I note oblique references to the uncertainty with respect to the science which was at least hopeful of an honest approach. Christine Milne's article yesterday was pitiful and means the Greens in Australia should more appropriately be renamed 'The Permanent Basket Case Party'.

JamesK: So you admit there is an 'Apocalypse'? Crikey! Now, there's a once in a lifetime admission!

If anything, I would have thought Ross Garnaut might have understated the problem. If only his report can get through the vast acreage of cotton wool which inhabit's the space most of use for a brain-the mind of politicians, and 98% of the world's right-wing (I was going to say thinkers. Now that would be tautology.) proselytizers. If it wasn't so tragic it would be amusing to hear the 'phone conversations of the opposition as they try to redeem their creds after ignoring the issue for 12 years under their late, unlamented, lunatic lap dog of George Bush, John Wanker Howard. How will Rudd handle it? I feel sure that after his performance against John, 'the grabber', Brumby, and the Murray Darling River disaster, he will do f*ck all.
So know everyone we have indeed been faced by an apocalypse, and its four horsemen are "over population", "rape of the environment", "drought", "starvation". Kinda gives the driver a bad name!
Of course Australia will suffer the most. We are the driest and most ecologically fragile country on earth.

Jim, interesting reading thank you. I'm sure JamesK will find a way to dismiss it with a "pithy" one-liner of no importance typed (somehow) with fingers in ears.
