I too was wondering why this report based on a non-random sample of 14,00 in June 2007 received so much publicity when Roy Morgan Research publish Body Mass Index results based on more than 50,000 randomly sampled people each year. Results are published each quarter in their readership study and can be broken down by thousands of other characteristics such what they read, eat, do, who they vote for, their religion etc etc. There are quite a few years of history too. And the results are quite similar - Roy Morgan Research estimates that 25% of people aged 14 or older are obese compared Baker IDI 26%. So, I hope we haven’t had to invest too much of the tax payers heard earned when this information is so readily available. Of course, the BMI is not really a measure of fat. Someone with a lot of muscle like say an Olympic discus thrower or weightlifter would almost certainly meet this definition of obese.
