It is strange that the Cairns Post can have quite good local business coverage and comment, and offer that at the same time as Mr King’s very questionable contributions.

Re: Gavin King’s article in the “Compost” (as we up here in the Far North know it ). Our Gav has form of course in the misogyny stakes. His usual target is the Mayor of Cairns Val Schier -who in the lead-up to this year’s regional council elections (where she knocked off “Bulldozer Byrne,” the incumbent of 11 years) - he continually baited with comments - not relative to her policies - but instead centred on her hairstyle and choice of glasses - both, incidentally, attractive and unobtrusive. His lazy sexism is standard stuff in the Compost but unfortunately the editor won’t be taking him to task for it. It is New Limited after all. And he IS the editor.

Re; Female Friendly Gavin. The same fellow who cobbled together a local environment group of which I am a member and the national ‘Sorry’ movement in a half page of furious invective a few months ago. The kindest thought would be that he does it deliberately to stir up the readership and sell more copies. Sadly, he seems to believe it. He is clearly one of the ‘right thinking’ Australians to whom he appealed in the earlier article. Not worth responding to, really.

Re: The Cairns Post. Seems caveman Gavin has been reading academic and noted feminist and cavewoman Camille Paglia. She uses a similar analogy to Gavin for matters of sexual harassment and date rape. She equates it to driving to New York and leaving your car keys on the hood. Paglia says: “My point is that, yes, the police should pursue the thief and he should be punished. But at the same time, the police - and I - have the right to say to you ‘You stupid idiot, what the hell were you thinking?’.

re: Cairns Post. I took the opportunity to read the rest of Gavin King’s remarks,he also said
“If a woman is flirting or wearing a short skirt or drinking too much she never deserves or “asks” to be raped.”which seems to me to an unexeptional remark. It is easy to take the political correctness road and while the first part of the article may be badly phrased his heart seems to me to be in the right place.
What if he had made a remark to the effect that everyone knows drinking to excess leads to aggressive behavior among some males; and any male who failed to take this into account when going on a bender was partly at fault if he got involved in a fight with another drunken male?
