State of the Planet

Panda problem. The last remaining pandas living in the wild are under threat because of the earthquake in China. It is estimated that only 1,590 pandas are left living in a remote mountain area which was devastated the quake. Landslides and large-scale damage to the forest has destroyed what little habitat they have left.  — The Times

Trouble at the top of the world. Arctic ice continues to disappear at alarming rates. Satellite images show there was a 20% decline in 2007, compared with the average 7% trend. Arctic ice was meant to last until 2080, but now some estimate it could be gone by the end of summer 2012.  — Larvatus Prodeo

Whale lovers. Polling undertaken by the Greens has shown what most of us already knew – Australians don’t like whaling. 87% of people said that the government should take the Japanese to the International Court, while 71% thought Peter Garrett hadn’t done enough to stop whaling.  — Greens

The sunspot enigma. Not even solar physicists know why our sun has lost its sunspots and what this odd solar silence might be indicating for our future. — The Daily Galaxy (submitted by Mark D.)

Lachlan, your choice of blogs is excellent. Topical, apparently authoritative and, in the case of the sunspots, very thought provoking indeed - especially in relation to humanity’s apparent heating of the earth via various paths.

Now, if only I could find out precisely whata solar spot is and what it does, I would be much better informed.

    Keep it up.
