Mmm…this is my take. I reckon Beattie was the jilted lover. That Rose gave him the flick after being used for a bit of on-tap workplace relief and then when she went out of the parliament he sat waiting for the inevitable call -you know the one that all ex MPs make - Kaiser, Gareth Evans, Kernot - when they discover real work doesn't pay much and there's no limelight. So she give him a bell and he says bugger off - you gave me the ‘A’ and you can’t come crawling back. No job, no deal. So she turns nasty and full of booze and bad manners cons an ex-staffer to run from the Queen Street Mall back to the bunker to deliver the obvious. So he did what he did. Rang the CMC, dipped into the state’s coffers and sent her to jail. She looks like the town bike, there’s no egg on his face and he packs his bags for South Carolina – Queensland’s sister state – to recycle his Smart State spin as a fait accompli. Shame it’s all only policy cause if it was a smart state it would have insisted the key players in the saga be granted immunity to get to the truth. But that’s the deep north and why Beattie is so happily at home in the deep south.

The Queensland Parliament appears much like the ABC studios at Toowong, highly contaminated and long overdue for shut down. What a human resource nightmare with even an ex-Premier admitting he went out for the count. Beattie concedes he ended up a physical wreck (bags under his eyes, an unhealthy paunch from poor diet and no sleep) and in his own words - the King is dead! In court Merri Rose was deemed to be suffering depression and had hit the bottle before she attempted to blackmail the King. A staff member dies from a workplace injury, the current Deputy-Premier Lucas admits 'his driver may have taken a second traffic offence on his behalf ', the health parliamentary secretary Karen Struthers gets pinged for drink-driving at three times over the legal limit (by the way is either attending extra-curricular road safety classes?) then Pat Purcell slugs two senior bureaucrats in a violent outburst and steps down as Emergency Services Minister and Travel Safe Committee member – anyone know if he’s doing the Belinda Neal anger-management course? If only the CMC could sanitise the human resource model they’re using in the Queensland Parliament. Surely it’s top of the list of Queensland’s most unsafe workplaces. If it isn’t, it should be.

Is Bernard Keane saying Beattie and Merri Rose had an affair? If so, why doesn't he simply say it rather than continuing the innuendo?

Why not mention that Peter Beattie has flatly denied your reported accusation?

no matter what... the sheer mind's image of Beattie physically bonkin' a woman... causes immediate grotesqueness ... right outside my mind's third eye thank goodness...

Still down in the dirt. Perhaps the reason why these political staff positions are so onerous is that reporters are always grubbing aroun for something new( not necessarily true) to spring upon them. Murdoch has much to answer for this trend but why does Crikey have to follow suit. Don Dunstan said that the press ( he meant Murdoch you were'nt around then) simply wanted to make people feel powerless so that they would be seen as the peoples' protector. Just fancy a government of journalists at the behest of proprieters as a governemt. Even Howard's rabble would be better.

I'm now happily employed outside of electorate offices, but spent the first seven years of my career working in two electorate offices for South Australian state MP's. It's a tough gig, and it's only now that I've spent time in other workplaces that I realise how unhealthy the work can be at times. Both of the MP's I worked for were bright, talented people who worked at least as hard as I did (and often harder) but neither were the best at managing their staff, and the simple reality is that the Parliamentary system offers absolutely no training to new MPs about staff management, and political parties offer very little support too. My simple message is to prospective employers - if someone applying for a job you're offering has electorate office experience, chances are they'll be productive, inventive, hard-working and extremely appreciative of reasonable working conditions. I suggest you give them a go.
