Where would Australia be without Fairfax? A print media controlled by Rupert Murdoch, a fate worse than death. It's in all our interests that Fairfax prospers and continues to provide a sane alternative to the commercial greed, megalomania and just plain anti Australian attitude of the Murdoch press.

When John Della Bosca ,on his bike ride ,told a photographer to "get a real f***ing job" the petal of a snapper should have taken it as wise advice instead of running back to his editor to report the words. The way Fairfax is slashing it's decades of investment in solid reporters and photographers is beginning to really downgrade their product to it's rivals's levels. The Sun Herald is now completely tragic and the SMH is begging to compete with the Telegraph in content and style, apart from a few notable writers. ( and how long will they last ?). The "rivers of gold" in advertising could dry up pretty quickly if they continue to be a content lite publication that delivers a swag of glossy brochures as well -the kind wthat annoyingly get stuck in our letter boxes everyday. I mean who wants to actually pay to have them delivered ?. This is what happens when real newspaper men don't run the show. But is James B.Fairfax really the right man at the top ?. Although he has publishing in his blood , it isn't the adventruous type- Rural Press are just printers in the end and his investment in Courier Newspapers isn't exactly backing a company known for it's journalism-just more advertising. He certainly should move quickly though as a major shareholder to put someone at the helm who knows about newsapers. It will be his and our loss in the end if he doesn't-and quickly.

Venise, you right. Whoever becomes CEO of Fairfax should be from Melbourne. He should have done a stint at The Age (preferably when Graham Perkin was there). For some commercial killer instinct he should have worked for Rupert. He should have at some time risked his own money in the real world and made it big time. He needs to beyond reproach and be respected by his peers as a giant. Crikey! Venise, you and I have just described Eric Beecher!

Not only time for Ron Walker to go but also David Kirk and Jack Matthews
Fairfax had the inside running in online opportunuties in real estate and everything else and have completely botched the whole thing.
Real estate for instance - Fairfax had real estate in print tied up nationally, they should be streets ahead but fail dismally and have allowed realestate.com.au to surge ahead making fools of themeselves and Simon Baker CEO of realestate.com.au a multi millionaire in the process, I bet he cant believe his luck.
The Fairfax web sites are full or errors and just dont work in many instances it's pathetic, whats more their print business runs in direct competition to their online so they dont help each other.

John: I apologize if I've got it wrong. I thought I'd read somewhere that news media company profits were, these days, reliant on the success of their internet activities. I am more than happy to be corrected.

Cheers,

Venise

In order to be absolutely fair-a quality I'm not noted for-print media around the globe is not doing well. The newspapers which are the strongest have a thriving internet section. Whereas the Age I believe, were slow to enter that part of the market; end of my being fair.
Whoever is the new CEO of The Fairfax group should, ideally, come from a newspaper background, ideally from Melbourne. I believe the heart of the enterprise is in Melbourne and you'd have to be from this city to understand its nuances. An Age without Melbourne would be a non event. QUESTION: How did the Age go when Conrad Black had it?
As Peter says: A print media controlled entirely by Rupert Murdoch would be a tragedy. All biased, extreme right-wing editorials- verbose ones at that-and scribes who are paid to put Rupert's view of the world before their own beliefs. Just look at the OZ, although even they didn't fall for the line that the Herald Sun took prior to the last election: Vote for the Coalition! They probably put it a little bit more subtly but that was the message.

They have to get their internet part of the deal working on a 24/7 basis. At the moment, if you wish to comment, you have to do it before 11am, or you will be met with a barrage of "This Forum is closed".

Has Ron Walker done any good for the Age? To me he always seems to be a Peter Temple creation. He has far too much power over the state government and all the ludicrous 'games and events' they ram down our gullets. The GP, the commonwealth games, there was another tawdry event whose name escapes me. And I have an appalling thought that we are going to subsidize some sort of soccer event. As Walker is worth a squillion why can't he fund one of these inane events out of his own pocket? What would the books be offering that Bernie Ecclestone gets his own way and manages to have the GP run at night? Will Brumby
capitulate? YOU BET! LOOK AT ALL THOSE LOVELY PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES. Whereas the planned desalination project is tucked away out of sight, no photo opportunities. So why should I give a bugger? That would be a typical Brumby reply. And if the State Coalition were to get into power the taxpayer would have to fork out money for a new 'games' every week, permanent round the world, first class travel for all government members in order to grovel at the feet of Ecclestone and Bumface II, in order to re-introduce special knighthoods.
You guys need to have a long hard look in the mirror, the Fairfax media are the bastion of good journalism...I don't think so...have a look at Media Watch occasionally. Fairfax's track record in fair and unbiased is pretty shoddy at the moment....News are looking good by comparison

By the way ,replacing Ronny Walker is a good idea, they should get rid of Andrew Jaspan at the same time, but having Mccartney take over is not so great, the slash and burn king will kill what's left of the these once great papers.

Venise, the newspapers which are strongest have good local supprt good quality journalism and good secions, the internet doen't translate into good circulation.
