On the issue of political sponsors, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think The Liberal's Richard Court introduced WAs FuelWtach in the late 1990s. After about 8-9 years of it, I'm still not sure if it makes any difference to the price of fuel here in WA, but it does mean, that by letting the FuelWatch website know of my local suburb(s), I get an e-amail, every day at about 16:00, letting me know of the cheapest outlets in my area for the next day. I further know that it will stay at that price for the next 24 hours.

Bernard, I know you're the Canberra Correspondent, but can someone ask the oil companies what they think of Fuelwatch? They've managed to be remarkably silent on the issue, which must mean something. They howled in protest in WA, so I guess that means they initially suspected it would empower consumers. This time round (after the experience of the WA version) they've not said a word. What does that tell us?

I am aware this may read like a conspiracy theory. Curious and curiouser this fuel business. We all know that there is about 30 - 40 years of oil left. So it runs out, just stops. Maybe not, never an edge with one side oil and one side without. What if the government said 'what if ..." and came to the decision (if not already): better stockpile some for defense, commonwealth cars etc not to mention the Aussie airforce one.

Fuel watch maybe designed to bring a different consciousness in the population regarding fuel use, getting people ready for the bigger rises in say 5 years (?). When everyone 'knows' everyone can agree. This Fuel Watch thing is more than meets the eye, the media debates on it are persiflage.

Look no further than Martin Ferguson for the leaker - he never was happy with Energy. Just the Labor party playing its normal payback games. Who cares if you sink the ship?(vague siviex reference). It's just little Marty letting Kev know that he's peeved.
