nice try james. I worked on a melbourne newspaper in the sixties, and was sent round to the hains office, which I think even in those days was Portland House on the north side of Collins St, to do a piece on one of his charities. prior to leaving for the interview i was called in by the editor and was given very strict instructions as to what questions i was to ask and what i would write, with the caution that mr hains was a VERY powerful, VERY wealthy, VERY influential person indeed. That, at that time, put him up there with the Myers, the Clarkes, and so on. I have seen him several times after that and have no reason to believe that anything has changed. It would not surprise me in the least to find him in the multi-billions league.

I'm equally surprised that BRW couldn't locate a photograph of David Hains. Unless I'm mistaken, it is the same DH who is a highly successful owner-breeder of racehorses, including Melbourne Cup winner Rose of Kingston, and the immortal Kingston Town. So, there's bound to be plenty of photos of him in newspaper files. To prove the point it took me two clicks on Google to find a photograph of Hains as a spectator at the 2004 Melbourne Cup, and that on a Fairfax site!!!
