I'm still not convinced that we need to have Bill Henson's photos of naked kids as art if it risks having children abused by other photographers.

The next artist might be an unknown using the internet to sell their art instead of Bill Henson at a gallery.

Thank you Andrew Bartlett for a sane article on this very heated debate. However, "..but I do believe the public interest would not be served by any charges being laid" really makes no sense. It would be preferable if Henson &/or the gallery were not charged, I agree, but on the other hand the police cannot march in, take down images from walls and websites without a reasonable expectation that that this should go to court. The police are not the judicuiry...thank heavens!. There is no real alternative here. If we were to 'err", I prefer that as a society we 'err' on the side of children. Not every child in our society has safe and loving familial protection and I believe we(society) must provide 'backup' for the child. Most of human suffering can be traced to an unhealthy upbringing. This has been known in ancient times: " and the sins of the fathers shall be visited on the sons and the sons sons for .. generations"

Thanks for lending a little clarity to the debate. It's never easy to argue complexities in the middle of a polarising issue.Someone's sure to throw the elitist tag at you for suggesting that the photographs would be acceptable in the context of the gallery, but the hoi-polloi couldn't cope with them. But I think you're probably right - but I'm still processing it all. I'm pro censorship in certain cases, which puts me against many of the anti-bookburning crowd.

What do we now think about the piddling naked boy on the swing in Prospero's Books (Peter Greenaway), andt Nabokov (famous collector of butterfly genitalia)?

Perhaps we as a society need to have the discussion about paedophiles and how best to deal with them to protect our children. When you start asking people, even in a white, middle class suburb, a very large proportion have experienced it. We need to understand paedophiles better, and then people might not confuse the issues as I think has been done here.

Andrew Bartlett can always be trusted to deal intelligently and in a balanced way with a controversial issue. What a shame that, after July, we will lose the Democrats in the Senate. The comments of Andrew Bartlett and Lyn Allison on this issue show how much they are needed on the current political scene.
