The insularity being shown by the defenders of Bill Henson ( and I've never seen his work) is astounding. If a middle aged man were to take his computer to be repaired and images of nude teens of 12/13 year olds were found on the hard drive, police would be called, a search warrant issued and the person would be treated to a devestating raid and complete overhaul of their personal life with all the trauma that goes with it.,and none of the pussy footing treatment being dealt out to Henson and the Oxley gallery, whether right or wrong. Instead the general public, and it seems the informed art circles asume those who have been subject in the past to charges have been in posession of the worst of the worst material because of a few high profile cases ( a prosecutor for example). Finally when this subject touches one of their own they are out in force. Even the claim "but it's art" is suspect as that art is surely for sale, albeit at extremely high prices. It's surely a commercial enterprise. This case must have legal ramifications for a long time to come and I feel the police will proceed no matter what. As for the self appointed experts like the Hetty Johnsons of the world-not one has yet shown any credible evidence that this type of photography-considerd artistic or not ( as opposed to very horrible r*pe style stuff of infants) has ever been harmfull to children when they have grown older. Or why haven't we seen a mass of disturbed adults in France where families in their thousands visit nude beaches in the South and regularly record their adventures on film, or Eastern Europe where simialr activities have been normal for generations ?. Has everyone forgotten that the scouting movement is still flourishing and was started by the presumablly respectble Sir Baden Powell who not only kept a presentation book of the nude photographer Wilhelm von Gloeden but was once quoted as saying "there is nothing more pleasing than watching a group of n**ed youths gamboling in a river on a summer's day". Who knows what was in his mind at the time ?. Perhaps he was thinking in terms of art.

To steal a phrase from Crikey - FFS! Banning naked babies from ads? What? Who calls for this? I think children should be banned in ads, but more because most of them are obnoxious and stupid. But given there are people who think naked baby pictures in nappy ads should be banned, perhaps I need to widen my definition of 'stupid'!

Niall Clugston writes that peak oil is "a meaningless shibboleth for believers in a coming oil crisis." The sentence even started with "In fact." However, in fact, peak oil or Hubbert's Peak is the calculated study of oil discovery to determine oil production at a later date. Oil discovery has peaked and troughed long ago so it is natural to assume that oil production will follow that trend. If it ain't there it ain't there. Peak oil does not refer to supply outstripping demand or any other event. There is no doubt that speculators, futures traders and supply and demand are adding to the cost of oil but i fear that the underlying cause of increasingly high prices is the fact that there isn't much left.
