Kate, you can pick an abortionist a mile away. They never use the language normally used when speaking about the unborn and giving birth. Pregnant women always talk about "my baby", abortionists talk about "the foetus', and having the baby becomes, to use Lucy's term, " spawning". Anything to dehumanise!

My favourite part of the whole thing was reading the DT's coverage. Basically, they found a whole bunch of families on $150 000+ to cry poor, in detail, under the banner "FAMILIES LET DOWN BY RUDD" or somesuch. One of them had wanted her baby bonus to pay for a home birth, because god forbid she should do her spawning in a public hospital with all the plebs. Another was saying "it's not about the money, it's about the recognition that what I do is important". What's wrong with a World's Best Mum mug? And all the stories started with "Mark, 35, an advertising account director, and his wife Briony, a stay-at-home mum, make $220 000 between them, but say they don't feel rich", as if wealth redistribution should penalise only those who FEEL rich. In aggregate they formed, as someone somewhere once put it, a walking advertisement for a massive luxury goods tax.

"John Howard did it when he was in trouble at the beginning of 2001, but wisely resisted pleas for an encore for the next seven years" There, there Mungo that nasty Mr. Howard is gone. No need to fret that he did something wisely.... He's gone! I promise!..........................................What d'ya mean you miss him?????
Whilst I may not have put it quite those terms, John James is correct and that is unfortunate for ordinary Joe (or Lucy) Bloggs .

Mungo, sorry but I have to agree with Peter Johns. The goal posts have moved significantly and largely silently. I have no idea how folks with kids, car, mortgage etc and $150k could possibly be defined as rich. If only it were true! Just to be helpful - my definition of rich is "significantly less out goings than incomings". Most families on $150k are just holding their own - in Sydney they may not even be doing that!

... and you can pick an obsessive fundamentalist from a mile away too. They always manage to weasel their pet topic into any conversation, no matter how unrelated.

Poor old Mungo seems to be strungling with his maths....

'They are, however, among the very top earners in Australia, amassing more than 90% of their fellow Australians and considerably more than twice the average. In global terms, of course, they are towards the peak of the top one billionth.'

Wouldn't the top 'one billionth' be,...er...the top 6 or so richest people in the world? even if you reduced it drastically to the 'top one thousanth' you're still only talking 6 million people - which, while undoubtedly including many Australians would hardly include a couple earning $150,000

"..God forbid she should do her spawning in the public hospital with all the plebs" Lucy, I dont know which editions of the DT you've been reading but you must have missed the ones describing "spawning " ( interesting term that only an apologist for abortion would use, never a mother actually expecting! ) that has ocurred in the toilets of major teaching hospitas here in Sydney 'cause there was no bed.
So Swan's brilliant move to shift more people to the same hospital is an ominous sign of whats to come. With Roxon ans Swan working together with Iemma, get set for a wild ride.
