Characters like Cameron and OlympicFoodStealingGoldMedalist Dogs are far more important in our personal biographies than, say, balloons tied to chairs or feathered federal treasurers. I love the animals who animate your work and your obvious affection for them. Goodbye lovely Cameron, and thank you FirstDog for making this poignant, elegant cartoon for us even though you are very very sad.

Condolences, I know the loss and grief.

Our entire family was at the vets with tears down our collective faces the day our old dog was put down. I’ll be even worse when our cat Chairman Miouw (think Kevin Rudd’s cat only slightly less connected to reality) passes on. Condolences.

That was so poignant and sad. I’m so sorry for your loss. Our cats are also part of our family and I can’t imagine life without them.

    First Dog,
Sorry about the cat - but great cartooning - it drew tears around the workplace.

    You have my heartfelt sympathy.
Still, it is better to suffer unbearable loss than to be incapable of feeling it at all.

Buggering the cat is probably worse than not mourning it.

    Commiserations, ‘dog.
As one who, with two cats, met my partner with three cats, underwent and survived the feline equivalent of Bosnia when we all moved in together in ‘93, and 14 years on finally said goodbye to our last little girl, paw in palm, I know exactly how you feel. We see them all still, here and there. Gee, your pet carrier drawing still gets me …
It is a brave and truly tactile cartoonist who can wear his/her heart on your, er, canvas,
Love your work, love your humanity.

Condolences from me, too. My very old cat had to be put to sleep last year and I still get a bit sniffly when I think about her. While you can never replace a member of the family, I now have two Jasper Rudds in training to keep me on my toes.

Is this some type of satiric joke or something. What relevance does this have to politics or have I just missed something altogether. Bugger the cat.

    Well that sucks…

Chin up dude, cat probably hated you anyway ;-)

Rosebud. Seriously, I’m a dog person, but they are perfectly designed critters cats. Extensible backbones, rotating clavicle. Got to admire that intelligent design or whatever. Yeah I miss my pet dog, that was 25 year ago. The cats used to beat up our bitser but it was just their programme. It’s all part of life this business, the rest is illusion.

Wow, this brought a tear to my eye. Normally First Dog makes me ROFL…I’ll just get a tissue now :’(

    Condolences from me too.

Was your cat ginger or tabby?

We said goodbye to our cat about 4 years ago so I empathise - he was mourning the loss of his best mate - our dog who passed away 6 months earlier.

The unconditional love given by animals sets them apart from humans - it is hard to say goodbye to that.

Nothing anyone can say can alleviate the pain. For what it’s worth - just know you bring laughter into many peoples lives.

Something there is not enough of anymore.
