I agree with your worry about jobs for humanitarian refugee intake quotas and asylum seekers However, in the light of a government importing a staggering 37,500 skilled workers, and an exploding population which cannot even be catered for in our infrastructure; water, and food are becoming short in supply. I thought you might care to remember the cause of the mess we are in. Once we educated our own people to become skilled workers. Now teaching standards have dropped so badly that we cannot even teach people to become good mechanics. According to the mechanics I know, the older ones , the teaching almost non-existent and the today's youth doesn't want to learn. So we import barely literate, in their own languages, workers who are going to be either Catholics or Muslims because there are more of them than other religions Neither of whom believes in limiting their families. Our poor degraded country reels under the weight of millions, on this the driest continent on earth. Cont....

Lets remember we are all boat people (including Nungas, Koories and Murries). Most of our ancestors were refugees and mine were economic refugees. Lets have a fair go to use the talent that turns up on our doorstep and forget the Howard xenophobic past.

Just to say Ross Gittins had a strong story about immigration affecting inflation about 2 months back which is the economic cause de jour apparently. And I think I read somewhere skilled immigration possibly more so. Presumably this relates to increased demand as per Venise below. This may be affecting the federal govt's attitude in the current cycle. Humanitarian refuge is properly a distinct issue I reckon about ethics and membership of global civil society.// As for slobby Aussie culture - only about 25% with tertiary education (and indeed not mutually exclusive of slobs either) - just a little caution, organised or singular, a healthy body is also a healthy mind. At least with my blogging and beady 5th estating on the other 4 pillars of power a decent exercise regime is critical to my creative juices flowing. The kind of sport being the issue here?

If we have to import more workers, why not get more people from South East Asia? Kevin Rudd wants a smarter Australia, rightly so, we should be bringing in these people. How often do you see Asian parents reeling out of pubs? Whereas 'Australian' kids are into instant gratification, sex and slobism. Asian kids become the best and brightest. Whenever there is a competition to find our cleverest students, Asian kids are usually 1,2 &3 and not a football in sight. Not for them being dumbed down and spoon fed on sport. I am utterly in favour of Asian immigration. We used to have a fine country until we whining, sniveling, footy obsessed Aussies blew it. Time to hand it over to people with the brains. I'll bet you won't hear them saying "Carn the pois." (pies). Carn the toigers. Yew bloody bewts. Sounds of beer being slurped.
