There is a psychological concept that Marilyn would do well to investigate: projection.

Clearly some of the older commentators have forgotten what government actually do when they bleat about big taxing and big spending. That's their job. It is in the constitution that they may raise taxes to provide services.

It would be a sad and sorry state if they raised no taxes and spent no taxes, or worse still raised the taxes and spent nothing.

Infrastruture Australia was legislated in the last sitting session and only required the surplus to be injected into it for future programs that are badly needed.

Like the docks - sending in the thugs with dogs might have terrified the workers but didn't fix the docks for increased exports.

Growing more food for exports means that 70% of our water is exported, not too smart.

Schools and hospitals have no precious little over the past 12 years and I think looking past tomorrow is always a good idea for a business and a nation.

The punters do largely like it except for the perpetual whiners. They vote liberal.

Turnbull's response tore shreds of Swan and exposed the sham narrative that has been the centrepiece of Labor's rhetoric for past 6 months. Labor will be looking for a new Treasurer and a new narrative to spin very soon. Wayne Swan's budgte has confirmed, for those who were still indenial, that Australia is in great shape and Labor had no crisis or even porblems to deal with. Well done Malcolm.

In a moment of convergence, I feel moved to mention the discrepancy of the print version of the SMH today - all budget, all the time - and the online version, which has some links to Op Ed slagging Swan but precious little reporting of what was actually *in* the budget.
